FROM THE PRINCIPAL

History on Display

The Cedar College Resource Centre is currently displaying 25 years of Cedar’s history, as we recognise and remember the incredible journey that we have all been a part of.

Since that first day of school, thousands of students and families, along with hundreds of teachers, have become a part of the Cedar College story. There have certainly been many changes since those teachers taught their first lessons in 1997! With new facilities added almost every year, the school landscape is vastly different from those early days.

Our History Timeline celebrates highlights and events from each of Cedar’s 25 years, and will be on display for students to enjoy until the end of Term 2. For those who can’t visit the Resource Centre, the timeline, complete with information and photos, is also presented online on its own mini-site at: cedarcollege.sa.edu.au/25years.

Around the Campus

This fortnight, our Senior School Co-ordinator looks at Student Leadership, some of our Reception students enjoy a healthy snack from the Year 11 Child Studies students, Year 9s put their $20 Boss program into action, and we look at displaying love to our Compassion sponsor children.

Leaders Who Serve

In the book of Mark, chapter 20, verses 43-45, Jesus talks about one of the key qualities of a good leader. He calls leaders to be servant-like, not to act in a way which demands people serve you, but instead to serve others.

Senior School Coordinator

In today’s world where we are encouraged to focus on self and individual success, the concept of servant leadership is often overlooked or forgotten. How unfortunate this is, given the positive impact servant leadership has on policy, culture and individual lives. It is imperative, as we train and teach the leaders of tomorrow, that we instil the principle of servant leadership in them.

Each year, as a new group of students step into student leadership roles, we spend time teaching them the importance of servant-hearted leadership and providing them with opportunities to outwork this in practical ways. This year is no exception, as all of our student leaders actively serve their school community.

Serving Faithfully

Our house captains for events, following up questions from house teammates and much more. Many of them went on to support staff in the Primary School Sports Day, as well as organising and running House events.

Our various prefects have also faithfully served our community in their various capacities. The sports captains have continued throughout the semester to support their peers in training and preparation for competitions, working with Mr Fernihough and attending training and events. They too played a big part in the success of Sports Day.

Our Faith and Fellowship Prefects have faithfully served the school, supporting Pastor Jeremy with the preparation and running of Chapel and prayer groups, as well as preparing and planning for next term’s Not Ashamed of the Gospel workshop. Our Cultural Arts Captains have worked behind the scenes with members of the Creative Arts department, preparing props and helping in the Drama department.

Supporting Others

This year’s head prefects have mentored and supported students from all grades, supported the other student leaders in their roles, participated in School Tours, and are organising an upcoming fundraiser. All of this whilst balancing their schoolwork, work, sporting and church commitments.

What a privilege it is to be part of the journey our student leaders are on. Seeing them learn and grow, as they work through their own ideas and understanding of what it means to be a servant leader. I look forward with great anticipation to see where God leads them in the coming years. With such servant hearts I know they will do great things.

Displaying Love Around the World

Displaying love is one of our goals at Cedar College. This term, in Primary and High School Chapels, we’ve been exploring how much God loves us and what it means to display that love to others.

During chapels, we have been able to hear from students and staff who sponsor children from projects we visit on our Thailand Service Trips. Many of these children’s families have been impacted by the effects of COVID-19 – losing jobs and security because of lockdown restrictions.

A Letter from Poom

“Greeting to you. I’m Poom. I’m 9 years old. I study in the 3rd grade. Thank you for your letter and the family gift. The teacher gave the money to me, my grandmother, and my brother to repair the house, paint it, divide the room, and buy necessary things… God bless you. In Christ, Poom.”

Poom is one of the children that Cedar sponsors through Compassion Australia. Last year our whole school community raised funds for his family to build a house. Some of the money was used to renovate a space for them to live in. The rest went to financing a shared vegetable plot for families to grow, sell, and share fresh produce. This display of love is not only impacting a child, but his family and their community.

Displaying Love

This year we are raising money for a much-needed well for Supporting Hearts Safe House, a project which provides protection and love for street kids in Myanmar. This is another group that our school has partnered with for a long time through our Thailand Service Trips.

Students can display love practically to our Thai friends by bringing money to assembly and chapel, which goes directly to our sponsor children.

Make a Difference

Another exciting way is for individual families to sponsor a child from one of these Thailand projects. Because of the school’s strong ties to these projects, our families are able to build meaningful connections with these children. If your family is interested in sponsoring a child, please contact our Thailand Trip Co-ordinator, Mrs Kerry Spriggs.

Cross Country Champions

Well done to the students from Year 4–7 who participated in the SAPSASA District Cross Country carnival, on Monday May 24th.

Not only did our students give some incredible performances, they also represented Cedar well with their amazing attitudes and effort. At the end of the day, Cedar was again given the title of District Cross Country Champions. We had 21 students qualify to compete at the State Cross Country event, which will be held in Week 7 at Oakbank. 11 of our students finished in the top 3, within their age category, which is an amazing result.

Thank you to Mr Klassen who trained the students, and to all of the parents who took the students to training and supported them on the day.

SACSA Cross Country

Following on from their very successful SAPSASA District competition, students from Year 3–7 participated in the SACSA Cross Country Carnival in Week 6. It was the biggest team we have ever taken to the event, with 63 students proudly wearing the number 28 singlet and running for school pride! The students had been training hard with Mr Klassen on Tuesday mornings and were ready to race, doing so with incredible resilience and excellent results. While the overall school results have not yet been published, I would like to congratulate the below students on some outstanding individual efforts. Well done – I am incredibly proud of you all!

Enterprising Education

The $20 Boss program challenges students to solve a real problem and help them better understand their relationship with money.

Designed to fit into the Australian Curriculum, the $20 Boss program is mapped against general capabilities and relevant learning areas for students.

Year 9 students at Cedar have formed social enterprises, pooling their start-up capital of $20 each. The students began trading among the High School and Primary School during recess and lunch times, while another group of students are coming in on the Student Free Day, in Week 7, to wash staff cars.

Transferrable Skills

Enterprise skills are transferable skills that enable young people to engage with a complex world and navigate through the changes that they will inherit. Many jobs in the future will demand that employees have around 70% more skills and experience in enterprise, than they did in the past. Skills classified as enterprise skills include: problem solving, communication, digital literacy, teamwork, presentation, confidence and agency, financial literacy, critical and creative thinking and project management.

A Cause to Support

The students have had opportunity to trade on multiple occasions, refining their products and processes with their experience. Students donate a portion of their profits to a cause of their choice. This year, students are supporting Compassion, Soldier On and the Hutt Street Centre. The students’ engagement and growth throughout the unit has been very encouraging. We look forward to the rest of the student trading period in Weeks 6 and 7.

Starting Healthy, Staying Healthy

Students in the Year 11 Child Studies class have been looking into how children require a healthy and nutritious intake of food in order to grow healthy and strong.

The Year 11s connected with Mrs Tirimacco and Mrs Davies’ Reception class in the weeks leading up to the day, in order to plan and prepare a healthy recess snack for a five-year-old.

The Year 11s also had to consider the various foods that each Reception student likes and dislikes, and cater for any special dietary requirements, which are becoming increasingly prevalent.

After the various food items were prepared, each snack was presented in an individual container, personalised with the student’s name and a variety of decorations to make the meal visually appealing. The Reception students enjoyed discovering the various fruits, vegetables and grains in their snack boxes, and it wasn’t long before the meals were polished off! Both classes thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the process.
