FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Beyond the Classroom

At Cedar College, we believe learning extends far beyond the walls of a classroom.

Excursions, camps, and hands-on tactile experiences provide students with unique opportunities to see God’s creation, apply classroom lessons in real-world settings, and develop a deeper appreciation for the world and those around them. Students gain firsthand knowledge while encountering new perspectives. This strengthens faith and helps learning come alive!

Beyond academics, learning experiences outside the classroom foster personal growth. Collaborative learning alongside others can take students outside their comfort zones, encouraging curiosity, teamwork, and independence. This provides greater opportunities to expand students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

I am thankful to the many Cedar staff and teachers who dedicate extra hours to planning and participating in these valuable learning adventures for our students.

Around the Campus

In this issue of CedarNews, we revisit the incredible time our student and staff team spent in Thailand, embrace one Crazy Day in Primary School, reflect on a fantastic start to the year at both the Year 7 and Year 12 camps, and celebrate our SACSA swim team along with some remarkable individual student achievements.

Public Holidays – Term 1

Monday March 10 – Adelaide Cup Public Holiday.

High School Sports Day

High School Sports Day will be held on Friday, March 14. Please note that there will be NO lunch orders available for High School students on the day. Instead, a Sausage Sizzle will be available, with proceeds supporting our Thailand service projects. We recommend that students bring a packed recess, lunch, and drink, even if they plan to purchase a sausage, as lines may be long and supplies could run out.

All students are required to wear their House polo, PE shorts, and hat. Parents are welcome to join us on Vickers Vimy Oval and must sign in upon arrival.

Upper Primary Sports Day

The Upper Primary Sports Day will be held on Friday, March 21. All students in Years 3–6 will take part, and parents and friends are welcome to attend and support their teams!

Students are required to wear their coloured House t-shirt, PE shorts, and hat on Sports Day. Team colours can be displayed through mascots, streamers, zinc cream, and hair ribbons, but dyed hair, face paint, and tutus are not permitted.

Student orders for the Sausage Sizzle must be pre-paid through Qkr! by Monday, March 17, while visitors may purchase them for $3 on the day. House Team badges must also be pre-ordered by Friday, March 14, for $1 each.

A Bake Stall will be open for purchases during recess only. Coffee and hot chocolate will be available from the Coffee Pod in the morning for $3 each.

Primary School Learning Conversations

Our Primary School Learning Conversations are scheduled for Week 10 of this term.

The Learning Conversations will take place on campus, in your child’s classroom. Parents and caregivers will be required to book a time online, and further information will be sent home soon.

Absentee Notification

It is important to notify the College whenever your child will be absent from school. Absentee notifications can be made by completing the Absentee Form available through your myCedar login. Alternatively, you may call the school office.

If required, the Front Office may contact you via phone, email, or text message to confirm the absence.

Kiss&Drop Reminder

Please note that, due to safety requirements, Kiss & Drop is NOT permitted via our Fosters Road entrance.

If you use street parking around the school for drop-off or pick-up, please be mindful of our neighbours and do not park across driveways or obstruct street access in any way. This also applies to Cedar College’s internal Kiss & Drop road, as traffic must continue flowing from Navigator Drive.

For those with older children, please consider picking them up 10 minutes later to help reduce traffic congestion during peak pick-up times.

RRHAN-EC updates for all volunteers and coaches

All volunteers at Cedar College are required to complete and submit a Volunteer Application Form, RRHAN-EC Training, DHS Working With Children Check, and Code of Conduct agreement.

Members of the school community who have previously completed RRHAN-EC training should be aware that their certificate expired at the end of 2024. To continue volunteering in any educational capacity, you must update your training online via the Plink website.

A copy of your updated certificate must be submitted to the Front Office (via email at [email protected] or in person) before commencing any volunteer or coaching role in 2025.

For further information, please contact the Primary School Office.

Primary School News

One Crazy Day!

Our Year 6 Student Leaders extend their sincere gratitude to our Primary School community for their enthusiastic participation in Crazy Day last Friday.

Through our Crazy Day  event, we successfully raised over $500 for Compassion! As a school, we are proud to sponsor five Compassion children: Poom, Anupong, Waratchaya, Fresh, and Chiku.

As part of the Student Leadership program at Cedar College, our leaders have the opportunity to organise and manage fundraising initiatives. One of these supports our Compassion children, while another, held later in the year, allows students to select a charity of their choice. It has been inspiring to witness their creativity, dedication, and planning come to life, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

Soccer Summer League

For the first time, Cedar had the privilege of entering a team in the 5AA Football Five5 Summer League, held at ServiceFM Stadium.

Coached by Shane Cosenza, the team were nervous as this was their first experience with competitive soccer but were excited to develop their skills and gain valuable experience.

Competing in a mixed-age league, they faced some older and more experienced teams. However, the boys never gave up, showing resilience and determination each week, which resulted in four wins. Even with some difficult games, the team loved the opportunity to play and had heaps of fun!

We’re proud of their determination and commitment

Congratulations, Cedar Football Five5 team!

Student Achievement

We’re always proud to celebrate the achievements of our students, both past and present. Recently, several have excelled at high levels, and we’re excited to share their success with you.

SACE Art Exhibition

Two of our 2024 Year 12 Visual Art/Art students have had their artwork accepted into the prestigious 2025 SACE Art Show.

We’d like to congratulate Ella Saunderson, whose artwork titled Autism was selected, and Charlize Hyunh, whose artwork titled Turn and Face the Strange Changes was selected.

The 136 artworks from across the state, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, costumes, and multimedia works, showcase the incredible talent of students who completed SACE Visual Art and Design in 2024.

The exhibition is open to the public and school groups, from Tuesday 18 March – Thursday 10 April 2025. Visit the SACE website for more details.

Australian Open Water Championships

Piper Cameron delivered outstanding results at the Australian Open Water Championships in WA earlier this year!

She secured silver in both the 7.5km and 5km events, missing gold by just fractions of a second. Her success has earned her a spot in the 2025 state flippers squad.

Piper has also been invited to a National open water training camp with Swimming Australia, where she has the incredible opportunity to learn from our countries’ leading coaches in Lennox Head, NSW, from March 12–16.

Well done, Piper! We’re proud of your dedication and achievements!

Middle School News

Year 7s Mix it Up

Last week, the Year 7 students headed to Victor Harbor for an exciting camp—it was a time to mix things up and give new things a go, and also meet new people.

For many students, one of the camp highlights was the 14km bike ride to The Bluff and back. While most students were confident riders, some had little or no experience. Many students who had never ridden a bike before gave it a go and ended up learning, while others pushed themselves to complete the challenging ride—and had a lot of fun along the way!

Camp offered a wide range of activities, including bodyboarding, beach games, the Flying Kiwi, an escape room, a bike ride, and night games. The Flying Kiwi proved to be a challenge for most students, but nearly everyone gave it a go, resulting in plenty of fun. Each student who pushed through their nerves was proud of themselves, realising they were capable of tackling difficult challenges.

New Connections

Beyond the activities, camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to get to know one another better as they start their High School years. With plenty of free time to play games and chat, students were able to connect not only with old friends but also with new classmates.

The Year 7s had a fantastic time, embracing new experiences and forming new friendships.

Living Faith

During Week 5, as part of their Christian Living studies, some of our Year 8 and 9 students were blessed with a visit from Cedar Old Scholars Jared Ogisi, Jaylen Aberle, and Zayd Blakers.

As recent graduates, these young men were familiar faces to many of the Year 8s and 9s, who could easily relate to their experiences and the challenges faced in Middle School.

They shared how God has transformed their lives since graduating from Cedar, and it was inspiring to hear their stories and see their enthusiasm for their faith in Christ!

Anyone interested in chatting with them further, or hearing more about their stories can find them at Navigator Youth, where they serve as leaders, or at Navigate Baptist Church’s Sunday services.

Year 12s Head to the Hills

In Week 2, our Year 12 students and staff launched into the academic year with an unforgettable retreat at Woodhouse in the Adelaide Hills.

With a mix of adrenaline, teamwork, and nostalgia, it was the perfect way to connect before the busy year ahead!

Wednesday set the tone with tube sliding and laser tag, followed by a throwback to the 2000s— think retro vibes, classic tunes, and a quiz night filled with laughter. Thursday brought the heat (literally!), but that didn’t stop students from tackling the high ropes, zip line, rock climbing, and abseiling. Beyond the thrills, these activities strengthened leadership, resilience, and communication skills. The evening provided a chance to unwind with board games, campsite strolls, and meaningful moments of prayer and worship.

By Friday morning, we were a little weary but still eager for more! A final round of disc golf and geocaching wrapped up the retreat, sending us home with tired legs, full hearts, and memories to last the year.
