Making Time to Celebrate
Over the next four weeks, our school calendar is filled with celebration events.
We will celebrate the end of 13 years of schooling with our Year 12s tonight, and this is always an emotional time, particularly for parents and caregivers! During the evening, we will celebrate academic achievement, sporting achievement, curriculum achievement, and also character achievement. Often overlooked, character growth is certainly something to celebrate, as it demonstrates who we are and lays the foundation for who we will become.
This is why we celebrate character growth from Reception. We present Character Awards at Junior, Upper, Middle and Senior School Celebration Evenings, to recognise and encourage the personal growth that takes place during each student’s journey through school. We look forward to our parents and caregivers joining us at the various Celebration Evenings ahead, as we celebrate the growth and achievement of each student at Cedar College.

In this issue of CedarNews, we also celebrate Mrs Jenny Marshall, who is retiring after an incredible 26 years at Cedar College, we hear about the Year 4 Camp, check out the many activities taking place in the High School Creative Arts, and round up the interschool sports carnivals from the last few weeks.

Celebrating a Cedar Pioneer
As we come towards the end of the year, we would like to thank Mrs Jenny Marshall for her many years of service and commitment to education.
Jenny will be retiring at the end of 2022, and has played an integral part in the establishment of Cedar College and the CLIC department. But her story at Cedar began well before 1997, when she started as a volunteer while preparing for the school to open.
Prior to 1997, and the school opening, Jenny contributed to the enormous effort of renovating the school with many church members, spending hours, days, weeks, and months getting the property ready for our first students.
In the beginning…
Cedar College opened in 1997 with two classes, one Junior Primary class situated where the Primary Digital Technologies/Music rooms are now, and one Upper Primary class located where Primary CLIC/ Science is now. Jenny worked for the first two years as a volunteer teacher, teaching with Mr Thomson and his Year 3-5 class.
Jenny has worked in numerous teaching roles at Cedar, mentored many teachers and student teachers throughout her journey, and has brought a wealth of knowledge of teaching practice. She has seen much growth and change take place over the past 25 years at Cedar, and worked tirelessly to create the CLIC department, which is, fittingly, where she will complete her teaching journey.
The Journey to CLIC
In 2006, Jenny introduced CLIC in a little transportable room which was situated where the Reception classrooms are now. Jenny’s desire to give students with learning needs some additional support was a welcome addition to the school.
From the very beginning, Jenny has continued to bring warmth and support to students and staff during her journey at Cedar. She has been a considerate, kind, and loving teacher, staff member, colleague and friend.
Jenny, you will be dearly missed at Cedar, but we know the next chapter in your journey will continue to allow you to bring love and warmth into the spaces that you visit. May God continue to lead you in what He has planned for you.
We thank you for all of the time and tireless energy you have put into the lives of students and staff throughout the past 26 years.

Student Free Days – Term 4
Friday December 9 – all students.
The final day for High School students is Thursday December 8.
Thursday December 15 – all students.
The final day for Primary School students is Wednesday December 14.
Canteen Closure – Term 4
Please note that the Canteen will be closed for the final two weeks of Term 4, Week 8 and 9, from December 5.
This means that no lunch orders or recess purchases will be available during these weeks.
Term 4 Graduation Dates
Graduation dates, for students in Year 12, 9 and 6, are as follows:
Year 12 Graduation
– Thursday November 24, from 7:00pm – 9pm.
Year 9 Graduation
– Thursday December 8, from 7:00pm – 9pm.
Year 6 Graduation
– Monday December 12, from 6:30pm – 8:00pm (arrive from 6pm)

PE/Sports Uniform Update
The Uniform Shop now has stock of our new Sports Shorts and Track Pants, as well as a limited supply of the previous style Shorts and Track Pants at a discounted price, until current stock runs out. These prices will be displayed on Qkr! and in the Uniform Shop.
Our all-new PE/Sports Shorts have an athletic fit in a 4-way-stretch microfibre water-repellent fabric, mesh inner, red accent with yellow piping, zip pocket, micro-mesh back panel, drawstring, and the Cedar College crest on the left side.
The updated Senior Track Pants have a modern fit in a 4-way-stretch microfibre water-repellent fabric, cotton lining, micro-mesh back panel, zip pocket, ankle zippers with yellow piping, and the Cedar College crest on the left side.
The Junior Track Pants have been updated to match, including ankle zippers with yellow piping, and the Cedar College crest on the left side.
2022 Yearbook
One copy of the 2022 Cedar College Yearbook will be available for each family on the final day of Primary School in Term 4 (usually given to the youngest child).
High School students may come in on this day to collect their book, otherwise they will receive it on Get Ready Day. Additional copies may be ordered from the Primary School Office, at a cost of $15 each (Year 12 students will each receive their own copy).
Free Kids Christmas Concert
CityReach Kids Ministry is excited to be hosting ‘Not just another Christmas Concert’ from 4pm, Saturday December 10.

Chapels and Assemblies can be attended by invitation from the involved classes.
Parents/caregivers are able to sit in the allocated chairs at the back of the Auditorium.

Digging Deep at Year 4 Camp
The Year 4s experienced three days of river cruising, caving, trampolining and outdoor activities, when they headed to Illawonga campsite in Term 4.
Squeezing so many fun activities into the three days made is hard to choose some of our favourites — but here’s what we liked most of all:
So Many Adventures!
“On camp we had an outstanding time at Illawonga! We did so many fun things. My favourite was caving because we got to walk through a cave with challenges. There are so many fun activities and tons of nice people.” – Amelia.
“Camp this year was so exciting! My favourite activity was the trailer ride because we learned about the family called the Browns and how they lived. It was fantastic! Illawonga was the best. We did lots of thrilling activities and had lots of fun!”- Indianna.
“We had an awesome time at Illawonga for Year 4 camp. My favourite activity was the boat ride because we got to see some super cool things and we got to drive the boat. The food was really good, and it was just an awesome camp.” – Isaac.
“I loved the night walks — the stars were bright and beautiful” – Eve.
“I enjoyed archery because it was something I had never done before” – Lily.
“I enjoyed playing hide and seek in the foam pit” – Heidi.
“I liked being in a dorm with my friends” – Jake.

High School News
Creative Learning
The High School has enjoyed a range of events over the previous few weeks, across a number of different curriculum areas.
German Day
Students in Middle School celebrated “German Day”, where, for the first time, they celebrated all things Deutsch. The Flammkuchen was a particular delight, made right here at Cedar by Anna Fontaine, originally from Stuttgart. This specialty has its roots in the testing of the oven to see if it was hot enough for baking. The very quick savoury or sweet thin pizza-like rectangle fed all the Year 7 and 8s on the day. The other favourite of the day were the real Brezels (or pretzels) made in Lobethal. Students enjoyed consuming these during the day as they experienced an array of German music, language, and culture, right here at Cedar.
Visual Art and Design Exhibition
The Creative Arts department has also been busy across all year levels. Yeat 12 Visual Art and Design students held their annual Graduate Exhibition, to showcase student work as part of their SACE practicals for the year. Students, families, staff and alumni attended the exhibition, held in the Cedar Resource Centre. The wide range of creative works included traditional art techniques, digital art, book and magazine design, CAD work, and pottery.
Performing Arts
In the Performing Arts curriculum, Year 10 students recently held a performance of episodic scenes centred on the challenging and sometimes heartbreaking trials of adolescence. These short scenes examined the social and emotional issues faced by contemporary teenagers. Issues such as body image, peer group pressure, jealousy, love, anxiety, friendship struggles, relationships with parents, exclusion and passive bystanders were explored.
Year 11 and 12 Drama students have been working hard on an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, directed by Stage 1 students, Eryn and Lara. Set to be presented this week, the performance has allowed students to explore the creative process and has been a wonderful collaborative experience for all involved.
Sports News
Interschool Carnivals Round-up
Interschool Carnivals have been running hot over the last few weeks, with a number of Cedar teams taking home the championship flag.
Year 11/12 Vista Beach Volleyball Champions
The Year 11/12 senior boys have taken home the trophy for yet another Vista day carnival, making it 4 from 4, for 2022. This has been the most successful boys’ sporting group at Cedar College with 7 championship wins at various competitions this year, which is an incredible achievement.
The Year 11/12 girls’ team also produced a fantastic effort to finish 4th overall. The beautiful weather at Glenelg provided the perfect setting to say goodbye to the Year 12 students as they represented Cedar for the last time as a playing group. Thank you to these students and many other Year 12s for their passion and commitment to Interschool sport over the years!

Year 3-6 Basketball
In Week 2, students from Year 3-6 took part in the SACSA Basketball Carnival. The Year 3/4 day enabled students to display the skills they had learnt during training at school, and through their involvement in after-school basketball teams. This was the final event for the Year 3/4s for 2022, and I thank Dan Bailey and Brad Pedler for coaching the teams and assisting with the training.
The four Year 5/6 Teams participated in the Div 1 Competition with Andrew Williams, Mr Ray White, and Mel Grantham as coaches, who did an exceptional job.
The Silver teams did extremely well, spending time developing in their skills and teamwork and enjoying the opportunity to experience a SACSA carnival.
The Year 5/6 Boys’ Gold team did an exceptional job all day. On entering the Grand Final, they were prepared for a tough match and played incredibly well, but were narrowly beaten by Prescott South. Congratulations to Tyler A and Liam G, Duel MVPs.
The Year 5/6 Girls’ Gold played well all day and met King’s in the Grand Final. The girls held their nerve and won with ease to finish in first place. Congratulations to Chloe G, MVP for the day.
SACSA Table Tennis
In Week 3, students from Year 5-10 headed out for the SACSA Table Tennis Carnivals. The earlier date meant that there wasn’t as much time to prepare and train for the event. However, this didn’t stop the students having a fantastic day playing a very technical and skilful sport. Congratulations to the Year 7/8 Gold Boys team for making the Grand Final and only narrowly losing to Temple, 2-1. The Year 5/6 Girls were knocked out of the Grand Final match, and played off for Bronze. They defeated their opponents 3-0 after losing to them in the minor round 0-3, which was a huge improvement by the girls! Thank you to Mr Andrew Bendikov and Mr Tim Maddern for training and coaching the team.
