FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Important Conversations

In a time when Zoom, text and email is all too common, we can take for granted the privilege and value of meeting for face-to-face conversations.

As students and families settle in to their new year levels and classes, the Primary School took the opportunity to hold their Learning Conversations with parents and caregivers this week.

Changing from our previous Week 9 sessions to an earlier Week 4 time slot has allowed teachers to introduce themselves to their students’ parents and caregivers, and talk about school life. We hope that this initiative was beneficial for families, and has helped open important lines of communication for the year ahead.

Around the Campus

In this edition of CedarNews, we take look at the amazing Vickers Vimy LEGO build which took place in the Resource Centre, the Year 12s share their thoughts on their recent camp at West Beach, we find out what our Prefects and Captains experienced at their recent Student Leadership Vision Day, and Middle School Co-ordinator, Mr David Webb, looks at our Health and Wellbeing program for our Year 7 students.

Middle School - A Healthy Start

Life in the middle years is exciting, transforming and sometimes overwhelming.

Middle School Co-ordinatorYoung adolescents develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially and ethically. At Cedar we seek to be dedicated, empathetic, passionate, knowledgeable and relational, as we work with our Middle School students.

We are so grateful for the opportunity of working with your young person during this exceptional period of their life. The 2021 school year is off to a flying start, as students have returned to school, strengthened relationships, and developed new learning and study routines for the year ahead.

Support for Year 7s

Australian adolescents typically list issues such as coping with stress, school or study problems, and mental health struggles, as their top three concerns. To support our Year 7s in these areas, they undertook a time management workshop at the end of Week 3. Students from the Year 9 Health and Wellbeing elective met with the Year 7s over three lessons, where relationships were strengthened, and students mapped out their out-of-school activities. Students evaluated how to best balance sleep, recreation, relationships, responsibilities and homework.

The Year 7s are not given homework until Week 4, in recognition of the demands of adjusting to school life, including processing their new peers, teachers and physical locations in Middle School. The students have settled in really well and are now ready to take on homework. We look forward to our Year 7s continuing to thrive at Cedar and we are very grateful for the generosity of the Year 9 students who take an active interest in supporting them. If families with students in other year levels would like to use these planning resources, please feel free to contact myself or Miss Steel in the High School Office. Further resources to support families in managing adolescent life can be accessed at our Helping Teens page on the College website.

Working Together

I encourage parents and caregivers to share with their young people about how they balance their at-home responsibilities, relationships, recreation and sleep. These conversations, and our modelling, have a big impact on the way our young people cope with stress, work through school or study problems, and manage their mental health.

May we all thrive in and through the demands and opportunities of the year to come.

Mr David Webb, Middle School Co-ordinator

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will be open on Thursdays until Week 6, from 3pm – 5.30pm, in addition to the normal Monday & Wednesday trading hours.

Road and Car Park Safety

The recent tragedy at Balaklava has been a vital reminder for students and families to discuss the importance of safety when travelling to and from school.

Adhering to the 10km/h limit on the school property and exercising caution at all times, especially in the Kiss & Drop Zone, is of utmost importance.

On Fosters Road, the flashing 25km lights operate between 8am – 8:50am and 3:10pm – 3:45pm, Monday to Friday. Outside of these times, pedestrians do not have priority and should only cross if it is safe to do so.

At all times, pedestrians should only cross when it is safe to do so, and NEVER ASSUME that a driver has seen them or will stop for them.

LEGO Masters Live

The only thing better than watching LEGO Masters on TV, is watching LEGO Masters live at school!

Everything was awesome in the Primary School, as the dynamic LEGO duo of Trent and Josh began their live build of a 1:20 scale Vickers Vimy replica. The famous aircraft is well-known within Cedar College, due to the nearby historical landing site, just over 100 years ago.

Six Months in the Planning

Before the build began, Trent and Josh spent many hours working on their LEGO design, which began in mid-2020. The LEGOMasters were invited for a personal tour of the full size Vickers Vimy on display at Adelaide Airport, where they took detailed photos in order to begin the search for the required LEGO parts to build the model aircraft with.

The next step was to digitally design the build with 3D LEGO software, that enabled them to virtually fit each individual piece together, and develop a list of the required parts. Ordered from around the world, the required parts came in 40 separate packages, arriving over a number of months.

Time to Build

The actual construction took place in the Cedar College Resource Centre  allowing classes to watch the process and ask questions of the TV stars. Following an epic 12 hour build, the final model, including one of Trent and Josh’s signature oversized characters, is now on display in the Cedar College Resource Centre, where it will reside as a special part of Cedar’s history.

Watch a short time-lapse video of the build, and the final reveal, by clicking the video.

A Vision for Leadership

Last Friday, the High School Prefects and House Captains were fortunate enough to be provided the opportunity to participate in a ‘Student Leadership Vision Day’.

Throughout the course of the day we, as a team of student leaders, had the chance to grow stronger relationships with each other and gain some real vision into how we can further develop our leadership skills, so that we can finish this year having left a legacy.

Building Trust

In our first session, we were privileged to have a guest speaker, Matt, come in to share with us his professional insight into the inner workings of a ‘high-performing team’ as well as some of the finer points on leadership. We learnt how leadership can be defined as the ‘ability to influence others to behave in a desired manner, by their own choice’ and how to foster an environment that encourages team vulnerability so trust can be established between members, allowing them to ‘use their strengths to make each other’s weaknesses less relevant’.

A Responsibility

In our second session we welcomed Pastor Timon, from CityReach Oakden. He shared with us how we can be leaders, with Christ as our active example, and how to see leadership as a responsibility rather than a right. Pastor Timon taught us how a leader is not a leader if they have no followers. He helped us to understand some of the more important leadership roles, such as caring for a core group of followers, and discipling them, teaching them enough of what you know to continue your work, and to leave a legacy for others.

To finish off the day, we split up with our leadership role partners, to discuss what we had learnt, and how we could apply it moving forward. Overall, I think this day was beneficial to us all in developing both our leadership skills and synergy between members of the team.

Lightning Final

Our after-school basketball teams have been a great way for students to develop skills, and friendships, over the years. Year 7 Cedar Lightning Basketball team, has been one such team that has played together since Year 2. The Lightning played in the Grand Final at the end of 2020, winning their final game together against an opposition that had been previous undefeated all season, with a final score of Cedar Lightning 33 v Brickcity 31.

The Lightning has had various players join the team over the years, but special congratulations go to the Grand Final winning team of James, Cody, Dennis, Tyler, Joshua, Owen, Emily, and Oliver.

Navigating the Challenges Ahead

To set the course for a challenging year, our Year 12 students attended a three day retreat. We asked some of the students to share about their experience.

Gaining Perspective

“In Week 2 of Term 1, the Year 12s attended their retreat at West Beach. This camp was luxurious, compared to any other! We stayed in villas, equipped with private utilities and comfortable beds and couches. We enjoyed breakfast with friends in our private houses and let loose in the pool and communal spaces in the evenings. This year we were privileged to enjoy ice-skating, high rope activities and fantastic Greek food.” – Camille

“We took part in numerous activities and workshops, which helped develop our understanding on this year’s theme, ‘Perspective’. We began the retreat at the Ice Arena then headed down to the nearby park for cricket and races against Mr Rose on the flying fox. We then arrived at our villas for free time on the jumping cushion and the swimming pool. We finished the night off at the beach with frisbee, cricket and more.” – Samuel

Building Relationships

Physical and mental challenges were faced as we learnt how to view different situations from positive perspectives and transition from the mindset of Year 11 into Year 12. This camp offered an opportunity to build closer relationships throughout the cohort, sometimes through matching bruises, and allowed us have some fun while we can.” – Catherine

“Throughout the entire time, we learnt more about each other as a cohort, seeing sides of ourselves and others, previously unseen, and building lasting relationships on great foundations. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our time at camp, confident that I can go into Year 12 with a positive perspective, and a group of fellow students I can count on for almost anything.” – Armaan
